Astilbe's are attractive plants for moist semi-shaded conditions. They are grown for their very beautiful flower spikes made of hundreds of individual tiny blooms of white, through a whole range of pink shades to deep red. Flowering time is usually in early to mid summer and are of medium height from about 20 to 40 inches tall depending on the variety. Once over the flowers remain as dry seed heads which can be left through the winter as they add shape and interest to the garden at this time.

They also have attractive large leaves which can reach a large size. Their preference for sun depends on the availability of moisture. In fairly damp soils, they prefer partial shade, but if you can supply them with a wet boggy position all year round they will grow in full sun. They need year round moisture and will not tolerate soils that dry out in summer, so sunny chalky soils are best avoided. Good on clay soils.
