The balloon flower, Platycodon
grandiflorus (sometimes incorrectly called grandiflorum) is so named
because of the appearance of the flower buds before they open up into
usually blue to purple, but sometimes white or pale pink flowers,
depending on the variety. Flowering is in late summer.
They grow about 24 inches tall and spread
around half that distance across. They will grow in full sun or partial
shade and once established resent being disturbed.
The flowers are good for cutting.
