Heucherellas are a hybrid genus formed
from crosses between Heuchera and Tiarella. They are prostrate
mat-forming with the flowers carried above the leaves on feathery
spikes.
The leaves reach only a few inches, but
the white or pink flower spikes reach up to about 16-18 inches. They are good as
ground cover in a variety of situations from the rock garden to woodland
edge, some sun is required for best performance, though Heucherellas
will grow in full shade.
As they are hybrid forms, propagation is
not from seed, but by division in spring or fall. The plants also
produce small plantlets that root as they go and these can be taking as
cuttings. A parent plant could be placed in a pot and plantlets rooted
in "satellite" pots as they are produced by pegging them onto
the compost and then separating when rooted.
