Viburnum - American Cranberrybush

American Cranberrybush, viburnum trilobum, is a large, attractive and hardy shrub with big white flower clusters in late May, and then produces abundant scarlet berries in fall. The berries hang on into winter and provide food for birds. Dark green foliage develops an outstanding red fall color. Does best on well-drained sites with better than average moisture. Use as a specimen plant or effective in small masses and borders. American Cranberrybush is round-topped and fairly dense under cultivation, but can be poorly branched and open in native habitat. Cranberrybush Viburnum prefers a rich soil with ample moisture. It does well in full sun or shade and can become leggy and requires occasional renewal pruning to keep it in good form. It grows 10-12 feet tall and as wide and makes an excellent deciduous shrub for screening. more...

Wet areas that would drown other plants are a good home for the Arrowwood Viburnum, a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a slightly irregular rounded habit and nice arching branches. Miniature cream-colored nosegays appear in June-July, giving over to sawtooth foliage that spends the summer as dark green, then begins its fall transformation in yellow, changing to brilliant red, then a gorgeous deep reddish-purple. The fall fruit resembles clusters of small blueberries and is very appealing to birds. An adaptable and hardy shrub which can be left unpruned or trimmed back once a year for shaping. This viburnum then produces clusters of blue-black berries, and this fruit is highly favored by birds. The summer foliage is crisp and dark green; the fall colors range from yellow to orange to red to burgundy, but varies in intensity. Its mature form is rounded, but sometimes takes on an upright appearance due to long, upright stems and suckers. In the spring, 'Summer Snowflake' will bloom with clusters of white flowers that follow along the horizontal stems, creating a double row of blooms on each side.
