1. Basil

Wonderfully aromatic, this tender annual herb is perfect for the kitchen window sill. Simply pick off the leaves and add to salads or Italian dishes when needed. It's known to deter flies and also has many uses for aromatherapy. Basil is easy to grow from seed and can be planted out from May onwards for picking throughout the summer.

2. Rosemary

A hardy evergreen shrub with needle-shaped leaves, which are often used to flavor meat or potatoes. Best grown in a sheltered spot in the garden where it can grow up to 4 or 5 feet tall. It's easily propagated from cuttings. The plant is highly aromatic: the leaves make an excellent ingredient for potpourri and dried stems can be added to the barbecue for a delicious scent.

3. Lavender

A wonderful, fragrant shrub that is a must for any herb garden.
